A longitudinally seamed tube 7 to be welded transversely at 11 to form tetrahedral packages passes first through a rigid guide 9 which engages the tube in at least two diametrically opposite regions: this can be arranged to ensure that imperfections in the shape of the tetrahedra occur only within the region which is sealed transversely. The guide may comprise two parallel spaced edges or, as shown, a plate 9 formed with a hole 8, which may be square or circular, and which may have a flexible inelastic skirt 10, for example of P.T.F.E., depending from it.
