A stillage for use in combination with a fork-lift truck 24 in transporting billets 20 and such like comprises a rectangular frame 10 supported by four legs 11 which project above the frame 10 to form spigots 12. A rectangular metal deck 16 is mounted on the frame 10 so that either its front or leading side or its rear side or both can be raised relative to the frame 10. The deck 16 is stiffened by lengths of angle iron 14, is reinforced with two parallel angle iron bars 17 and has stiffeners 18 of box section. At a loading station, Fig. 1, a loading platform 19 is slightly inclined so that it slopes downwardly to the delivery end thereof. A base 21 is provided to receive the stillage and has a ramp 22 on which the forward stiffener 17 is deposited when the fork-lift lowers the stillage on to the base 21. The forward end 16a of the deck 16 is thus raised relative to the frame 10 so that it registers with the delivery end of the platform 19 and billets 20 can roll along the deck. The loading station has front and rear stops 25, 25a, respectively, operated by bell cranks 26, 26a and a push-rod 27 by which a specified number of billets 20 are allowed to run on to the platform 19. A receiving station (30), Fig. 2 (not shown), has a platform (31) downwardly inclined at its rear end. When the loaded stillage is deposited on a base (32) a ramp (33) raises and tilts the deck 16 so that the billets 20 may roll off. The stillages may be stacked and when loaded form a stock pile, Fig. 5 (not shown). The loading platform, the deck of the stillage and the discharge platform may each have a series of parallel conveyer rollers 36, Fig. 6, so that boxes and cases can be transferred from the loading platform to the deck and from the deck to the discharge platform.
