A header 11, designed especially for high pressure boiler feed water heaters, comprises a square or rectangular box-like member welded to one end of a cylindrical shell 17 of the heater, the box consisting of a tube plate 13, a baseplate 14, an internal plate 16 extending between the plates 13 and 14 and so forming two parallel passages 15, and side plates 12. The opposite ends of hair pin tubes, which are disposed within the shell 17 and arranged in a tube bank 18, are received in the tube plate 13 on opposite sides of the internal plate 16 so as to communicate with the passages 15. Pieces of half-pipe 20 are welded to semi-circular recesses 19 formed in the ends of the two side plates 12, so defining passages 21 which are transverse to, and communicate with the passages 15, the passages 21 being divided into two separate portions by blanking pieces 22 which abut the ends of the internal plate 16, so forming inlets 23 and outlets 24. Access holes may be located in the base plate. Alternatively, the recesses may be suitably blanked off and only one inlet and one outlet connection provided, such connections then being disposed midway along the plates 12, (Figs. 4-9, not shown). In a further modification (Fig. 10, not shown), the base-plate 14 is replaced by a further tube plate (31) receiving a second shell (32) and tube bank (33). The header may be made up of individual plates as above, or from compound sections which are completed by adding one or more plates.
