Soluble (non-cross-linked) copolymers of glycol mono- and di-(meth)acrylates are prepared by free radical polymerizing a monomethacrylate or monoacrylate of mono-, di- or tri-ethylene glycol, containing 0À05 to 50% (by weight of the total monomer mixture) of the corresponding bis-(meth)acrylate ester, to any desired degree of conversion up to 100% in a solvent or solvent mixture in which the copolymer formed is soluble, which solvent or solvent mixture has an interaction parameter X, with respect to the said copolymer, below 0À5 and is capable of swelling the corresponding cross-linked copolymer. Suitable solvents include dimethylformamide, formamide, pyridine, dimethyl sulphoxide, methanol, ethanol, t-butyl alcohol, diethylene or triethylene glycol, ethylene glycol monomethyl or monoethyl ether, formic acid, acetic acid, cyclohexanol, ethylene glycol, tetrafluoropropyl alcohol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, allyl alcohol, ethanol/water, npropanol/water, tetrahydrofuran/water, dioxane/water and concentrated aqueous salt (e.g. ZnCl 2 ) solutions. Glycerol is somewhat less suitable but can be used. Free radical initiators specified are benzoyl peroxide, ammonium persulphate, azobisisobutyronitrile, diisopropyl percarbonate, t-butyl hydroperoxide, di-t-butyl peroxide and p-cymene hydroperoxide; UV irradiation is also disclosed. The glycol-(meth)- acrylates may be additionally copolymerized with another monomer, e.g. acrylonitrile, alkyl methacrylate, styrene or vinyl acetate, which is soluble in the polymerization mixture.
