In a mineral-mining machine for the boring out of mineral from a seam vertical movement of the boring tool of the machine is, as the tool is advanced into the seam, controlled by adjustment of the axial pressure exerted by the tool on the seam in accordance with a determination of the vertical position of the head with respect to a datum level established in respect of the seam. The determination involves measuring either the distance of the tool from the roof and/or floor of the seam by measuring the back radiation from the floor and/or seam when radiated by a radiation emitter positioned at the periphery of the tool or the resistance encountered by the picks of the tool when the tool is cutting.
