Gas mixtures from reservoir 2 are separated into lighter and heavier fractions by allowing the mixture to enter through orifice 19 into chamber 1 in which a Mach cell shock structure 9, 10 has been created in a stream of an auxiliary gas from reservoir 5 between inlet nozzle 4 and outlet nozzle 12, within which shock structure the gas stream is travelling at supersonic velocity. Auxiliary gas containing part of the lighter fraction of the mixture is removed by pump 14 to tank 15 for separation while the heavier fraction of the mixture passes through perforated annular wall 18 to chamber 8, and is removed by pump 7. In examples, He and A are separated using CO 2 as auxiliary gas; SP36/SPA and SP40/SPA are separated using CO 2 or SF 6 as auxiliary gas; and SP32/SPSF 6 and SP34/SPSF 6 are separated using N 2 as auxiliary gas.
