A metal e.g. Ti anode for electrolyzing an alkali metal chloride e.g. brine in a mercury cathode cell comprises in profile a row of U-shaped members, each with one or more slots or holes 5 in the web portion 1 and with terminal portions 3 extending from the end of each flange 2 so that the terminal portions of adjacent members are inclined at obtuse angle e. g. + 120 degrees to - 120 degrees to each other and have a gap or slot 4 between their outer ends for electrolyte circulation. The anode may be shaped from a single metal sheet provided with the necessary holes and slots. The surfaces of the folded portions facing the cathode may be lined with a layer of Pt, Pt-Ir or Ir.
