In a method and apparatus for the determination of elements escaping in gaseous form from a molten metal sample the whole of the latter is while still liquid poured into a funnel having such an outlet dimension that the metal solidifies rapidly, whereby a part of the latter remains in the funnel and prevents access of air. Metal passing through the funnel is collected in a container placed in a receptacle filled with neutral gas. Preferably the receptacle is closable, being opened only to allow inflow of metal, at which time the opening is swept by neutral gas, while the funnel may also be swept by gas prior to entry of the metal. As illustrated, water-cooled vessel 1 contains crucible 4 which may be heated by means 5, 6, while neutral gas is introduced at 41. The opening 9 may be closed by sliding obturator 21, on either side of which are screens of neutral gas from inlets 40,17. In operation metal is poured in through the funnel which is then blocked by solidified metal; that metal which passes through is collected in pre-heated crucible 4 where it may be retained in a molten state, the gaseous elements evolved being withdrawn through outlet 18 for analysis.
