The final compsn. of the molten metal will include Ni and/ or Co; and at least one alloying element (I) with a high m.pt. is to be added to the melt. Elements (I) consists of B, Ce, Cr, Mn, Mo, Nb, Ti, Wv, V, and/or Zr. Elements (I) are first made into a mother alloy, which is based on Ni or Co, and contains 8-80% of at least one element (I); and the powdered mother alloy is added to the melt. The mother alloy pref. contains 0.1-25% Fe w.r.t. the total Fe + Ni + Co; and possibly 0.1-2% each of Al and Si, and/ or 0.1-1% Mg. Mother alloys based on Ni pref. contain 12-20% B; or 65-90% esp. 78-85% Ce; or 40-80% esp. 60-65% Cr. Mother alloys based on Co pref. contain 8-10% B; or 40-70% esp. 45-65% Cr; and numerous pref. mother alloys are listed. Elements (I) dissolve more rapidly in a melt when they are in a mother alloy based on Ni or Co, so a homogeneous melt with an improved yield of elements (I) is obtd.
