Plant material, such as dried or fresh plant (e.g. camomile, birch leaves and witch hazel) is mixed with water and decomposed with enzymes during aqs. extraction. Liquid parts are separated from residue, if necessary after inactivating the enzyme, and concentrated to 20-30 (25)% dry substance. Produced extracts can be diluted with water and/or low grade alcohol without residue, for use in cosmetics. Pref. only the aqs. extract, previously separated from plant raw materials, is decomposed with enzyme. Enzymatic decomposition pref. takes place in several steps, each of which can be adjusted for the decomposition of specific components, such as starch, protein or cellulose, under optimum conditions (ambient temp., pH, reaction time).
