The block consists of 50% light, hard material, e.g. coke and clinker treated with a binder-emulsion, and 50% corn straw likewise treated with the binder and ground. Specifically the emulsion is obtained by boiling lichen in one vessel until a fluid oil is obtained, and flaked calcium, natural pitch or fir pitch, coal dust, fuel oil or gas oil in another vessel. The two parts are mixed hot with added flaked calcium.
