To avoid adding roughage to the diet of ruminants a number of indigestable bodies, preferably made of a synthetic resin material and with a specific gravity less than 1, are administered to the animal. The bodies are characterized in that they have sufficiently roughened surfaces defining raised portions and depressions to physiologically trigger secretion of saliva by the animal through physical contact with the wall of the animal's rumen without harmful abrasion to it. To achieve this their size must preferably fall within a range of # inch to 1 inch in length and “ inch to 1 inch in width. Pellets of this type, which may be administered orally or surgically, are retained in the animal's stomach.
