Ceramic tiles 10 are assembled in edge to edge relationship on a conveyor 11 strips 13 of thermoplastic material are applied, passed under a heater 15 where the strips soften and become bonded to the tiles, passed under non- adhesive pivotally mounted rollers 16 to press down the softened strip and finally beneath a cooling head 19. The bonding material is a high molecular weight (greater than 40,000) thermoplastic polymer (e.g. polyethylene) in combinations with a medium molecular weight (3,000 to 40,000) thermoplastic resin (e.g. wood rosin) and fillers such as barytes, titanium dioxide or carbon black. The thermoplastic material may be applied in continuous strip along the joints or as individual square pieces at the junction of four tiles. The strips may be T-section. In a modification the termoplastic material is applied as already heated thermoplastic blobs from nozzles, then rolled and cooled.
