1349668 Production of aromatic petroleum hydrocarbon resins NIPPON OIL CO Ltd 21 July 1971 [22 July 1970] 34272/71 Heading C3P An aromatic hydrocarbon resin is produced by polymerizing at - 30‹ to 60‹ C. for 10 minutes to 15 hours in the presence of 0À01-5 wt. per cent of a Friedel Crafts catalyst and thereafter removing the catalyst, a fraction which has a conjugated diolefin content of 0À7 wt. per cent or less and the relationship wt. per cent of conjugated diolefin in fraction ¸ wt. per cent of polymerizable components in fraction Î 100 is 3% or less, a total content of indene and alkyl derivatives thereof of 2 wt. per cent or less and a relationship as above, but for indene of 8% or less, said fraction having been obtained by distillation from a hydrocarbon fraction having a B.Pt. range of 140-220‹ C. obtained by the thermal cracking of petroleum. Unreacted oil and low molecular weight polymer are also preferably removed from the product. The resin may be used in a paint composition which comprises (the parts being by wt. per 100 parts by wt. of the total composition) (1) 0-14 parts of a maleic acid resin, (2) 1-10 parts of a plasticizer, (3) 50-75 parts of pigment and/or filler, and (4) 24-49 parts of the aromatic hydrocarbon resin. Such paints are used especially for road markings. The invention also comprises a process for concurrently producing first and second aromatic hydrocarbon resins which comprises separating into fractions I and II by distillation, a hydrocarbon fraction of B.Pt. 140-220‹ C. obtained by the thermal cracking of petroleum, the separation being such that no intermediate fraction exists between said two fractions, the fraction being characterized in that fraction (I) is as defined for the fraction defined in the main invention above, and fraction (II) has a total content of indene and its alkyl derivatives of 20 wt. per cent or more and a relationship as defined above for indene, of 30% or more, and polymerizing separately said two fractions by the same method as described above, to prepare said first and second resins. The second resin finds use in printing ink compositions.
