The catalyst may comprise one or more Pt group metals and may be deposited on a support material, e.g. silica containing materials, aluminium oxide or active carbon. The catalyst may be used as a fixed bed or as a suspension. The preferred catalyst contains Pd. The preferred concentration of H 2 O 2 present in the hydrogenation stage is 300 to 1000 mgm/l. of working solution. The H 2 O 2 may have been extracted after oxidation using either water or organic vapours. The desired cone. of H 2 O 2 may be maintained by operating the extraction step such that sufficient H 2 O 2 remains in the solution or by adding H 2 O 2 to the hydrogenation stage.
