1382110 Irrigation of soil and feeding of plants SEALFIRE 25 April 1972 [26 April 1971] 19201/72 Heading A1B [Also in Division F2] Liquid, or a mixture of gas and liquid, flows through pipe 101 and control valve 102 into an underground pipe system 103 provided with diffusion points each comprising delivery means 104, 105 connected by a pipe to porous diffusers 106, 108. The flow rate at each diffusion point is controlled by a calibrated orifice in the delivery means, by the length and diameter of the connecting pipe, or by the porosity of the porous diffuser. In Fig. 2a, the delivery means is in the form of a coupling nipple 205 which has a calibrated orifice 239 and a nose 238 fitting into a hole in the supply tube 210, the nipple being held in position by a steel clip 241 and connected by a -flexible pipe 207 to the porous diffuser which is in the form of a porous tube closed at its free end by a plug. In another embodiment, Figs. 4a and 4b (not shown), the delivery means, connecting pipe and porous diffuser are combined into a single unit including a flat porous plate. An automatic valve 119 Fig. 1 or (619) Fig. 6 (not shown) may be positioned above ground level so as to ensure that when the system empties, air can enter and thus stop any suction effect through the diffusers. Syphon effects may also be stopped by injecting gas through cock 173 and pipe 172 into the system when cock 102 is closed. A programming device 118 may be used for the automatic control of the system. An automatic diffuser coupling has a needle 775, Fig. 7, which is fixedly attached to a porous wall 758 and fits into orifice 774 in elastic diaphragm 776 so that as the pressure in the system changes then the diaphragm moves and size of the orifice varies so as to alter the rate of flow of fluid. This device therefore automatically regulates the flow rate of the fluid.
