Substd-alpha-naphthoxy-acetamides prodn - by method commencing with reaction of alpha-naphthol and monochloroacetic acid

Title cpds. of formula: (where R1=H, lower alkyl R2=H, lower alkyl or lower alkenyl, R3=lower alkyl or lower alkenyl, with the condition that when R1 and R2=H R3= MEEt or lower alkenyl) are prepd. by reaction of alpha-naphthol with Cl-CR1H-COOH to form the alpha-naphthoxy acetic acid which is converted to the acid chloride by reaction with phosgene or thionyl chloride in the presence of dimmethylformide or triethylamine hydrochloride as catalyst. The acid chloride is reacted with R2R3NH to give the products which are known herbicides.
