Thermal treatment of furfurol - heated and passed over gas coke to prevent solid residue formation

Furfurol used as selective solvent, or furfurol extract mixt., at 120-220 degrees C is passed through a layer of porous coarse-grained gas-coke of 3-10 cm. dia., acting as crystalliser for residue-forming materials, at 0.1-10 vol/vol/hr., and subsequently recycled in order to prevent formation of solid residues, tending to clog up evaporators and bring apparatus to a stand-still. Pref. 5-20 vol. % of furfurol or furfurol extract mixt. at 120-220 degrees C is continuously drawn off and recycled to main stream after passage through the porous gas-coke layer.
