Carbon fibres - from extruded polyacetylenes, which are heat stabilised and then carbonised

Polyacetylenes, pref. terpolymers of organic ethers with terminal ethynyl gps. and m- and p-diethynylbenzene or copolymers of the m- and p- cpds., are mixed with an organic solvent, pref. o-dichlorobenzene, to plasticise the polymer, and extruded at temps. at is not 170 degrees C to obtain fibres with a dia. of 6-150 mu, the fibres then being heated at is not 1000 degrees C to stabilise the fibre and to increase its modulus of elasticity and then finally heating the fibres or fabrics thereof at 2000 degrees C to carbonise the polymer. Fabrics are suitable as heat stable, flexible filter cloth, oven cladding, protective clothing or for reinforcing epoxy resins.
