Polyacetylene terpolymers contg. as chemically bound units (A)(a) 80-95 mole % diethynylarylene units of formula -R (C triple bond C)2 (I) and (b) 5-20 mole % diethynyl units of formula -C triple bond C (III) w.r.t. the wt. of (A) and (B) (in which R is a m- or p-phenylene gp. is not 12 mole % being p-phenylene; other unsatd. valencies of the phenylene gps. can be substd. by is not 4 H, alkyl and/or halogen gps. R' is a divalent 6-40 C hydrocarbyl, -R2Y or -RXR- gp, Y is OQ or - COQ; Q is monovalent (halo)hydrocarbyl; X is -C(R3)2 -, -O-, -SO2 - or -CO-; R2 is divalent aryl; R3 is H or monovalent hydrocarbyl; a = O or 1). These terpolymers have optimum plastics props. for the prodn. of melt extrudable compsns. and can give optimum C yield in the prodn. of C films and fibres.
