Resolution of menthol, neomenthol or isomenthol racemic mixtures - - by esterification with benzoic acid derivs

Racemic mixts. of menthol, neomenthol or isomenthol are resolved into their optically active forms by esterifying the racemate with benzoic acid (opt. having one or more substituents on the benzene ring) or hexahydrobenzoic acid; seeding a super-satd. soln. or melt of the d, l-ester with crystals of the d- or l -form of the ester to induce selective crystallisation of the d- or l-form, and saponifying the resulting d- or l-ester by conventional means.
