Yeast, for nutrient and feed yeast, is cultured with use of highly conc. nutrient media in which sugar content is adjusted to optimum value (1.8-3%) by adding a sugar-deficient or sugar-free aq. diluent soln. having a solids percentage not below that in nutrient soln. Pref. diluent soln. is a yeast-free residual liquid from distn. of alcoholic liquors, of from yeast prodn. or from alcohol fermentation esp. from pine-wood waste liquors.
