Agent for control and prevention of inorganic scale deposits from water in aq. systems, esp. petroleum-and natural gas drill holes, conduits, heat-exchangers, cooling towers, subterranean pipes, storage tanks, contains a water-soluble vinyl pyrrolidone polymer consisting of monomer units of formula (I):- (where R, Ra, Rb and Rc opt. differ and denoate H or 1-5C alkyl), pref. PVP (where R = Ra = Rb = Rc = H) of 103 - 106 esp. 105 - 4x105, mol. wt. or pref. vinyl pyrrolidone polymer of same mol. wt. range, pref. used in 0.0005 - 0.02, esp. 0.005 - 0.01, wt.% concn. in aq. system.
