1,5,9 cyclododecatriene palladium complex- catalyst - for diene polymerisation

A pi-allyl complex of formula C12H17-19Pd Cl 2 is prepared by the reaction of PdCl2 with 1,5,9-cyclododecatriene. The catalyst mixture formed is used to polymerise (cyclo)aliphatic dienes and polycyclic olefins (e.g. norbornene, norbornadiene and butadiene). High mol. wt. thermoplastics may be produced by emulsion polymerisation. Reaction may be effected using a lower alcohol, glycol or acid solvent in an aq. phase contg. HCl and PdCl2 and an alkane phase contg. the triene.
