Microscopic algae-aerobic and semi-aerobic mass - cultured on a moving band

Algae are mass-cultured on vertically rolling bands, exposed in a natural-light greenhouse at 15-40 degrees C. These are inoculated with a layer of alge and firstly bred under 10,000 lux artificial light. The bands pass, at 0.002 m/ sec., through a tank holding a soln. contg. 1 g urea, 0.25 g KH2PO4, 0.25 g K2SO4 and 0.25 g. MgSO4 per litre, to which is added 1 ml. of 1% K ferricyanate and 1 ml. of a soln. of Arnon trace elements. The biomass is scraped off after 4-7 days, when the thickness is 0.3-0.5 mm. Optimum temp. is easily held and carbon dioxide does not have to be pumped in the nutrient.
