The carriage traverses on rails along a spinning frame having several ring and traveller spinning units, and a sensor on the carriage detects a yarn break at the spinning unit and arrests the carriage adjacent the spinning unit. A driven roller on the carriage reverses the direction of rotation of, and raises, the spindle of the spinning unit so that the two broken yarn ends can be sucked up by a suction nozzle and fed to a piecing up device on the carriage. Yarn breaks are automatically detected, and the broken yarn ends automatically pieced up.
