1,3-dichloropropene prepn - by thermally dehydrochlorinating 1,2,3-trichloropropane in the presence of oxygen

(which is the main component of 'D-D', a commercial mixt. also contg. 1,2-dichloropropane, and has activity against insects, fungi and, esp., nematodes while having low phytotoxicity) is produced by thermal dehydrochlorination of 1,2,3-trichloropropane in the gas phase in the presence of free O2 (O2 concn. pref. 5-55, esp. 10-30 mol.%). The presence of free O2 increases the selectivity of the dehydrochlorination reaction, and it also inhibits carbonaceous deposits on the walls of the reaction vessel.
