The invention comprises nitrates of steroid aglycones and steroid glycosides of the 20(22)- cardenolide and 20,22-butadienolide series, the unnitrated parent compounds of which contain at least one primary or secondary hydroxyl group; and their preparation from said parent compounds by reaction with a mixture of acetic anhydride and nitric acid or a nitric acid salt. Polyhydroxy starting compounds may be partly or fully nitrated (except that tertiary hydroxyl groups are unaffected). A cis-1,2- or cis-1,3-diol grouping may be protected before nitration of other hydroxy groups by reaction with boron trioxide. A glycosidic product may be acidified to give an aglycone. The products may be denitrated by reaction with zinc.
