A method of increasing the yield of peanuts comprises applying, as the active ingredient, an effective amount of at least one trihalobenzoic acid of formula wherein X 1 is Cl, Br or I and X 2 and X 3 are both Cl, or I, and the metal salts, esters, amine salts and amides thereof, to growing peanut plants, the trihalobenzoic acid being applied at a growth stage ranging from a week preceding the onset of flowering to two weeks after the onset of flowering.
