The arms 2 may be extended by hand or by mechanical or hydraulic means (not shown) and supported by the trestle 5 appropriately set by respectively adjustable tie spindle 8, rods 11 and locking bar 12. The trestle 5 can thus be arranged to compensate for bends and super-elevated rails 6 and position its platform 10 appropriately to receive the counterweights 13 from a counterweight truck (not shown) in a position necessary for lifting them into an operative position on the upper, slewing superstructure (not shown).
