Cpds. of formula (I): (where n = 1 or 2) are useful as intermediates for plant-protection agents and dyes, as fungicides, as pigments, e.g. for colouring plastics and lacquers, and their solns. are fluorescent. They are pref. prepd. by reacting a cpd. (II): (where m = 0-4; R is H or a leaving gp.) with at least the stoichiometric amt. of chlorinating agent at 200-400 degress C, pref. 250-350 degrees C, in a sealed vessel. When Cl2 is used as the chlorinating agent, =4 moles PCl5 or 4 moles PCl3 (per mole of (II)) must be present.
