1296187 Electro-plating of wire or strip M & T CHEMICALS Inc 19 April 1971 [15 April 1970] 23305/71 Heading C7B Wire or strip is electro-plated using an anode of the metal to be electro-plated and an anode support at least the surface of which comprises Ta or Nb or an alloy thereof. E.g. steel wire or strip is electro-plated with Zn, Sn or Pb. Fig.2 shows strip 13, which is connected as cathode and passes along the surface of a plating solution 12, electro-plating anodes 14 of the metal to be plated an anode support 16 of Ta or Nb or an alloy thereof, an anode sub-support 18 also of the metal to be plated and a positive terminal 22. During the electro-plating, the Ta and/or Nb in contact with the plating solution acquires an oxide coating. Specified electro-plating baths comprise: (i) ZnCl 2 + NH 4 Cl + HCl, (ii) ZnSO 4 , MgSO 4 + Na 2 SO 4 , (iii) SnCl 2 , Na 4 Fe(CN) 6 lOH 2 O, NaHF 2 , NaF, NaCl + an addition agent such as a polyethylene glycol composition or (iv) SnSO 4 . In an example, bath (iii) is used in electroplating Sn on to Ni-plated steel.
