Battery comprising zinc/pyrolusite electrodes with alkali electrolytes characterised in that the capacity of the Zn electrode is 40%, pref. 15 to 25% of pyrolusite. The Zn electrode also cont. a similar wt. of an additional metal which is a good conductor but is stable to pyrolusite and alkali; the additional metal is added as porous sheets, guaze, granules etc. and 2 to 3 atoms of this metal are present for each Zn atom. The separator between the battery electrode is made from a polyamide. These batteries are easily rechargeable after long periods of time. The addition metal can be amalgamated to Zn or can be Ag, Ag alloy Ag/Cu, Ni or Ni alloys. Alpha-pyrolusite is pyrolusite. The electrolyte can be 50 pts. wt. KOH, 50 pts. wt. H2O and 8 pts. wt. ZnO.
