1373375 Rolling and coiling metal STEEL CO OF CANADA Ltd 15 Nov 1972 [15 Nov 1971] 52995/71 Headings B3M and B3E A method of rolling a hot metal workpiece'in a mill plant including a first mill comprising a reversing mill stand 28, e.g. a roughing mill, a coiler 29, and a second mill 19-24, e.g. a finishing mill, comprises rolling the workpiece in the first mill, so that after its third last pass, from the side remote from the coiler to the side nearer the ooiler, it is of a length less than the distance from the stand to the coiler, and after its last pass, in the same direction, it is of a length greater than that distance, coiling it in the coiler, and uncoiling it and passing it to the second mill. A shear 18 is provided, and the final product is wound on one of coilers 25, 26, 27. The coiler 29 is shown in Fig. 8, together with entry and exit tables 73, 75, and hot metal detectors 78, 79. On its final pass from the stand 28, the workpiece 30e, which may be strip or rod, passes through pinch rolls 54, 55 and guide 56 to a three roll bender 57, 58, 59, so that the leading edge of the strip forms a coil supported on rolls 69, 70. As the coil grows, it falls on to rolls 68, 69. The table rolls, rolls 54, 55, and rolls 57, 58, 59 are all driven at the same peripheral speed, and rolls 68, 69, 70 slightly faster. When detector 78 senses the leading end of a workpiece, the table roll drive is stopped unless detector 79 indicates that the coiler is clear. When the leading edge reaches the bending rolls, roll 54 is raised slightly so as to function as a guide rather than a pinch roll. When detector 78 senses the trailing edge of the workpiece, rolls 58 and 59 are raised so that the coil is left with a straight end to facilitate uncoiling, and when the trailing edge leaves rolls 54 and 55, rolls 68-70 are decelerated so that the trailing end passes over the top of the coil and falls on to table 75. Uncoiling starts automatically, but if it is necessary to delay uncoiling, the coil is slowly rotated. When detector 79 senses the leading end of the workpiece, rolls 58 and 59 are reset, and the shear may be actuated. A retainer is inserted into the coil to retain it as the last few turns are unwound. When detector 79 senses the end of the workpiece, the retainer is withdrawn and the shear again actuated. A turn peeling device may be moved into operative position if uncoiling fails. The workpiece may be of steel or aluminium.
