High purity products are obtained and formation of polyglycols is suppressed by reacting OH-contg. aromatic cpds. or carboxylic acids with 1,2-epoxides (e.g. ethylene oxide) in the presence of a betaine-type salt of an oxidic sulphur acid having the general formula: (in which X is N, S or P; R1, R2 and R3 (the latter is absent when X is S) denote the same or different, opt. substd. alkyls, aryls, hydroxyalkyls or aralkyls; R is a divalent, opt. substd. 1-10C alkylene gp.; and Y is a sulphito, sulphato, sulphonato, thionamato or sulphamato gp.; R1 and R2 may form a heterocyclic ring with N). The products are used as textile auxiliary agents; printing paste components; starting materials for polyesters; comonomers for vinyl polymerisation.
