New poly:hydroxy cpds for polymer, esp polyurethane, prodn - obtd by epoxide ring opening of vernol acid contg fatty acid ester(s) with nucleophile(s) which can be hydrogen@, water, alcohol(s) or carboxylic acids
New polyhydroxy cpds. (I) can be obtd. by epoxide ring-opening of vernol acid contg. fatty acid esters with nucleophiles chosen from hydrogen water, alcohols and carboxylic acids. The vernol acid contg. fatty acid ester is used as a plant oil derived from Veronia galamensis and/or Euphorbia lagascae. The ring opening is carried out with H2 and/or water at 150-250 deg.C and 1-100 bar pressure, or it is carried out with alcohols and/or fatty acids in the presence of acid catalysts and at 50-200 deg.C. The alcohol is of formula R'OH, in which R' = 1-22 aliphatic hydrocarbyl and the carboxylic acid is of formula R2COOH where R2CO = 1-22 C acyl. The ratio vernol acid rich fatty acid ester and nucleophile is 1:0.2-1:5 based on the epoxide content. The epoxide ring opening is carried out to a residual epoxide content of 0-3.6 wt.%, based on the resulting (I). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) can be used in the prepn. of polymers, esp. polyurethanes. (I) are more readily available than standard prods. based on soya oil or (opt. hardened) castor oil.
