Cpds. of formula (I): (where n = 2-17; R is H, Me or Et) are prepd. by reacting CH2=CHCmH2mCOOR (where m = 0-15) with excess cyclopentanone in the presence of an initiator, pref. a cpd. releasing free radicals, pref. at 60-200 degrees C, to give a cpd. (II) of formula: (I); is = O and reducing this to (I), pref. with a complex metal hydride, e.g. NaBH4, at -40 to +40 degrees C. Cpds. (I) and (II) are expected to have pharmacological activity; Cpd (II) n = 6, R=Me is a prostaglandin intermediate.
