All the movable beams are driven from a common drive including traversing beam 13 and lifting beam 14. A water seal 43, provided to prevent air entering the furnace section 5, consists of a trough of water and dipper plates on the beams of the initial heating section. The ends of these beams are also cooled by water ducts and the fixed beams are cooled along their whole length in the same way.
