The furnace consists of a low temp. zone (1), and a high temp. zone (2), where zone (1) is on a lower level than zone (2); and the space between adjacent workpieces can be varied during their travel between the two zones. The difference in height of the two zones is achieved by locating the stationary beams in zone (1) on a lower level than the stationary beams in zone (2). The surfaces of the stationary- and/or the moving-beams pref. have profiled shapes. Moderate heating speeds are used below the AC3 point of the steel workpieces in zone (1) to avoid cracks; but higher heating speeds above AC3 are used in zone (2) to minimise scaling of the steel.
