Purification of cytochrome c - by passage through a column of polyacr /agarose gel

Purification is by passing a soln. of cytochrome C contaminated with protein through a column packed with a polyacrylamide/agarose gel in 'pearl' form, and collecting only the coloured fraction of the eluate which contains pure cytochrome C. Protein rapidly passes through the gel which acts as a molecular sieve. Cytochrome C is retained for some tine and then issues freed from protein. The prefd. gel pearls are of 100-160 mu m in dia. and contain 6% acrylamide and 4% agarose. Cytochrome is readily freed from protein and is suitable for parenteral injection.
