Fluorimetric determination of ammonia and amino acids

Ammonia and organic amino cpds. contg. at least one primary amino grp. esp. amino acids and their derivs. substd. on the carboxyl gp. are determined fluorimetrically (qualitatively and quantitatively) by contact with a cpd. for formula (wherein Ar is an aromatic gp. the gps COR1 and COR2 being fixed to adjacent C atoms, R1 and R2 are the same or different and are H or an organic gp). esp. o-phthalaldehyde or o-diacetylbenzene, and a reducing agent such as a thiol, or a borohydride. The reaction between cpd(s) is determined and the reaction is effected at pH 6-13, pref. 8-10, a blue fluorescence being produced the intensity of which may be measured with a spectrofluorimeter.
