Materials containing vanadium carbonitride or vanadium nitride or mixtures thereof with each other and/or vanadium carbide are produced by heating an oxidic vanadium-containing material with a gaseous hydrocarbon and with nitrogen and/or ammonia at a temperature between 800‹ and 1250‹ C., the treatment with nitrogen and/or ammonia being carried out after the treatment with the hydrocarbon, or partly or wholly simultaneously therewith. The term oxidic vanadium-containing material includes vanadium oxides V 2 O 5 , V 2 O 3 and other compounds having vanadium-oxygen bonds which can be reduced to vanadium carbide by hydrocarbons such as VOCl 2 . If desired a compound which is unstable at the reaction temperature such as ammonium metavanadate may be used. The final product may consist of vanadium carbonitride, a mixture of vanadium carbonitride and carbide and/or nitride, or vanadium nitride. The hydrocarbons are preferably those having 1-3 carbon atoms, particularly methane. Natural gas may be used as the source of hydrocarbon. The gas mixture may contain up to 20% by volume of CO. The process may be carried out in a continuous flow manner, preferably in a moving bed or a fluidized bed.
