A method of calculating the transverse contour of a pneumatic tyre, esp. with radial reinforcement, which is to be adopted while the tyre is in the vulcanising mould, i.e. with the beadings at a considerably extended distance apart as compared with the final designed spacing when mounted on the wheel, is as follows: the position adopted is such that the side walls run parallel to the axis of the tyre at the transition to the tread region, and that when the tyre is narrowed to its operating shape, the sides walls also satisfy the same condition, i.e. the optimum position selected for vulcanising the tyre is that in which there is a smooth transition from its walls to the fixed cylindrical tread region without any kink or sudden change of curvature. The other optimum position is the one adopted with narrow beading spacing when the tyre is mounted on the wheel.
