Uniform temp. gradient through continuous casting cross section near slab-surface is achieved by (1) determining the temp. at continuous casting chill outlet and/or in adjoining cooling zone on broadside of slab, simultaneously at = 2 measuring positions, one of which lies near edge and the other at a distance from edge corresponding to at least half the thickness of the slab, and (2) adjusting the cooling, specific to surface, in function of temp. differences present, so that a uniform surface temp. is set up over slab cross-section. Measuring and analysing av. temp. of pt. of already solidified rim zone-forming ranges near surface give more reliable data than measuring surface temp. itself.
