Paint compsn. in the form of e.g., a rod, which can be applied onto a substrate such as wood or paper by rubbing and dries within one hour to such an extent that it cannot be smeared by contact with the hand, consists of an emulsion comprising a liquid (pref. aq.) disperse phase contg. a film-forming polymer (e.g., a polymer or copolymer of vinyl acetate), and a continuous solid wax phase having m.pt. below the b.pt. of the liquid phase; a binder and opt. a pigment or dye are dissolved or dispersed in the liquid phase and/or in the wax phase.
