Mercapto alkyl silicon cpds prodn from thioethers - prepd by adding mercaptans to ethylenic silicon cpds, by heating with acid Friedel-Crafts catalyst or transition metal halide
These cpds. are produced by reacting a Si cpd. of formula R1R2R3C-S-R4-Si triple bond (in which R1, R2 and R3 are monovalent hydrocarbyl gps. or R3 can be H; R4 is a divalent hydrocarbyl gp. with the C atom of a methylene gp. bound to S; the free Si valencies can be bound to hydrolysable gp(s). monovalent organic gp(s). or O, this beng bound to other Si atoms, forming siloxanes) at 100-300 degrees C in the presence of an acid Friedel-Crafts catalyst or a transition metal halide. This one-stage process is very simple and efficient and gives almost quantitative yields from known starting materials. These can be reacted in 1:1 molar ratio without the use of special high-pressure reactors. No by-prods. are formed and no solvent is necessary.
