Machine tool for the mfr. of splined or grooved shaft elongated pinions, etc., from an elongated workpiece such as a steel rod employs an axially movable matrix or die. At one end of the machine frame there is a cylinder-piston unit that is hydraulically powered and positively engages a reciprocating tool slide which carries the die at its inner end. A stationary carrying head is positioned at one workpiece end, and a movable carrying head is provided for the other end. At the other end of the machine frame there is a second hydraulic cylinder-piston unit that is fed via a non-return valve and has its piston rod coupled to the movable carrying head to enable internal pressure arising from elongation, to be compensated for by pressure control via the non-return valve.
