The bucket wheel excavator is mounted on a moving frame (1). On this frame is a form of jib (5) which can be raised or lowered and swung horizontally about a pivot (4). The jib is counterbalanced by a weight (5p). At the other end of the jib a bucket wheel rotates about a horizontal axis. There is another part of the jib above the bucket wheel which is attached to a moving arm (9a & 9b) which carries a number of spikes. An electric motor causes the arm to oscillate thereby loosening the stockpile material which is then picked up by the bucket wheel.
