A wash liquid stream 9 arising from the washing of coke oven gas 1 in the towers 2 and 4 with a wash liquid 8 and containing ammonia is fed into the separator 10 in which ammonia is driven therefrom by contact with the hot gaseous stream 18. Ammonia leaves the separator 10 via a line 20 and the wash liquid 21 of reduced ammonia content is recycled to the tower 2 after cooling at 12 and 23. Streams 24 and 25 of wash water containing 0À2-0À6 g./l. ammonia can be removed from the tower 4.
