Low carbon steel sections are quenched immediately after hot rolling by immersion into water or by spraying a water jet or air jet on to the sections. Compared with the ferrite/pearlite structure of the normalised steel, the surface of the section will be either martensite or a mixt. of martensite and bainite. This will give a stronger steel, and its harder surface layer will make it more resistant to fatigue failure.
